Sendai Airport is the airport with the most international flights in the Tohoku region, with direct flights from Taipei, Kaohsiung, and Hong Kong. The airport has only one terminal shared by domestic and international flights. It is not large, but it has all the essential facilities. Note that rapid trains were discontinued on March 14, 2026, and all trains to Sendai Station now stop at every station, taking about 25 minutes one way. Transportation Guide from Sendai Airport to Sendai Station
The easiest way to get from Sendai Airport into the city is the direct “Sendai Airport Access Line.” The station is on the airport's second floor. After leaving the arrivals hall, go upstairs and follow the connecting passageway. The entire route is step-free, making it easy even with luggage. From 10:00 to 16:00, trains run about every 20 minutes. At other times, there are roughly 1 to 3 trains per hour. The first train departs at 5:45 and the last at 23:10.

Note: Rapid services on the Sendai Airport Access Line were completely discontinued on March 14, 2026. All trains now stop at every station, and the fastest travel time between Sendai Station and Sendai Airport Station has increased from about 17 minutes to about 25 minutes. Many websites still mention “17-minute rapid trains,” but you should allow 25 minutes when planning your trip. Suica, PASMO, and other transportation IC cards can be used. In addition, the limousine bus that once ran directly between the airport and Sendai Station has been discontinued, and there is currently no direct bus service.

Bus Guide from Sendai Airport
Many travelers assume there are direct buses from Sendai Airport to destinations throughout Tohoku, but at present the main year-round express bus service is to Yamagata Station, and it operates only twice a day. To reach Fukushima, Iwate, or Aomori, you need to take the Access Line to Sendai Station and transfer to the Shinkansen. There is also a seasonal Yamagata Zao bus that operates only during the ski season.

Airport bus notes: The Yamagata Station route operates on a fixed-seating-capacity basis. Some seats can be reserved online, and passengers may also board without a reservation, but boarding is not possible if the bus is full. Most vehicles have four seats per row and no restroom, so use the facilities before departure. The Yamagata Zao Onsen service runs only during ski season and requires advance reservations. Last season, reservations had to be completed by 18:00 seven days before travel. Outside the operating season, travelers heading to Zao must first travel to Yamagata and transfer. Payment on board supports cash, Suica, PASMO, and similar cards.

Sendai Airport Floor Guide
Sendai Airport is relatively small, with a single terminal shared by domestic and international flights. After clearing immigration, you can walk through the main areas in about 10 minutes. However, the airport has all the essential facilities. Most shopping and dining options are located before security, with little to browse after passing through. After international security, there is only the VEGA duty-free shop and one café. It is best to buy souvenirs in the second-floor departures hall before going through security. The second-floor passageway to the Access Line connects the airport and station entirely indoors, so you will stay dry even on rainy days.

Sendai Airport is currently undergoing a major renovation project. Construction resumed in March 2026, with commercial areas scheduled to open in phases from March 2027, a new security checkpoint planned for March 2028, and full completion targeted for March 2029. After completion, the second-floor shopping area will be expanded, the duty-free shop will become a walk-through store, and the third-floor restaurant area will also be enlarged. In other words, the current floor layout will change again. The transition period may be somewhat inconvenient, but it also means that your next visit could offer a more enjoyable airport experience.
Note: During construction, some facilities and equipment may be unavailable or subject to usage restrictions. The airport also advises passengers to arrive with plenty of time to spare. Before departure, check the official facility renovation notices for the latest status of restrooms, elevators, smoking rooms, and other facilities.
Sendai Airport Duty-Free Shops and Must-Buy Souvenirs
All souvenir shops at Sendai Airport are concentrated in the second-floor departures hall. Sendai specialties such as Hagi no Tsuki, zunda products, and sasa-kamaboko fish cakes are all available here. If you want to finish your souvenir shopping before security, this floor is your last chance.
Note: From November 1, 2026, Japan's tax-free shopping system will change to a “refund method.” Customers will first pay the tax-inclusive price, then receive a refund of the consumption tax after customs confirms at departure that the purchased goods are being taken out of Japan. Allow extra time on your departure day and keep the goods in your carry-on luggage in case they need to be inspected.
VEGA Duty-Free Shop (After International Security)
Its official name is “Duty Free Shop VEGA,” and only international passengers can enter. The selection focuses on standard duty-free items such as alcohol, tobacco, cosmetics, and perfume, along with duty-free exclusives, products not sold domestically in Japan, snacks, watches, and daily goods. The store is not large and takes about 10 minutes to browse, making it more suitable for picking up alcohol, tobacco, or cosmetics before boarding.

Hagi General Souvenir Shop
This is the airport's largest souvenir shop and is operated directly by the airport company. It carries a wide range of Miyagi specialties, including Hagi no Tsuki, gyutan, sasa-kamaboko, Sanriku seafood products, and agricultural and livestock products. Seasonal sections also feature limited-edition products made with seasonal ingredients. Another popular sweet is Date na Tamago, made with Miyagi Shirome soybean paste wrapped in sponge cake and coated in dark chocolate. If you want something to eat on the plane, the shop also sells airport bento known as “soraben,” including gyutan bento and salmon roe rice featuring Miyagi local cuisine, generally available from around 9:30.

Kikusuian Sendai Airport Store
This Japanese confectionery shop is operated by the tea company Ocha no Igeta. Its signature product is Kikufuku, a chilled daifuku filled with fresh cream, and it is also the store's most popular souvenir. Individually sold Sennichi Mochi comes in two flavors: chunky red bean paste and zunda. It is a convenient snack to enjoy while waiting for your flight. Small packs of bite-size zunda mochi are also available and are just right for one person. The shop has a dine-in area, and dessert service hours differ from regular store hours, so plan accordingly if you want freshly prepared sweets.

Zunda Saryo
This zunda specialty shop is operated by Kasho Sanzen, the maker of Hagi no Tsuki. Its signature Zunda Shake blends special zunda paste into a vanilla shake and comes in small and large sizes. It is a must-try drink for many visitors to Sendai. The zunda mochi is flash-frozen to preserve its freshly made flavor, and there is also a small four-piece “Zunda Mochi Petit” pack that is ideal for one person.

Local Sake Shop Hana no Kura Airport Store
This directly operated shop belongs to Miyagi sake brewery Ichinokura. In addition to its standard products and Miyagi-only items, it also sells local Miyagi sake such as Urakasumi, Tohoku wines, and shochu from regional breweries. Popular items include Ichinokura Sasanishiki Junmai Daiginjo and Urakasumi Kura no Hana Junmai Ginjo. Keep in mind that there are limits on how much alcohol you can bring back to Taiwan or Hong Kong. Check your duty-free allowance before buying, as exceeding it may result in additional tax.

This airport drugstore sells common medicines, cosmetics, earplugs, and travel-size items. You can also find things people often remember at the last minute, such as motion-sickness medicine. Sendai Airport Food Guide
Gyutan, seafood rice bowls, and zunda sweets—Sendai specialties are all available at the airport. Restaurants are located on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors, and all are before security, so eat before passing through the checkpoint.
Jinchu Gyutan Restaurant (1F)
Gyutan specialist Jinchu is located on the airport's first floor and is visible as soon as you exit the arrivals hall. Its signature dish is the “Whole Gyutan Salt Set (Veal).” The beef tongue is marinated in salted rice malt, aged at low temperature for 162 hours, and finally grilled over lava stone, creating a fragrant exterior and tender, juicy interior. If you prefer a firmer texture, choose the adult beef version, the “Whole Gyutan Salt Set (Beef),” which has a richer beef tongue flavor. It is a convenient place to enjoy a Sendai specialty right after landing or before departure if you have plenty of time.

Operated by Miyagi seafood company Fisherman Japan Marketing, this restaurant sources ingredients directly from Sanriku. Its signature dish is the “Gino Don,” made with premium coho salmon from Onagawa, known for its rich fat and melt-in-the-mouth texture. The restaurant's most popular dish is the “Seasonal Fisherman's Bowl,” while the manager recommends the impressively large “Heaping Sky Tuna Bowl.” If you want one last taste of Sanriku seafood before leaving Tohoku, this is your chance.

Airport Restaurant TREGION GALLEY(3F)
This Tohoku-style Italian restaurant on the 3rd floor specializes in Western dishes made with ingredients from the Tohoku region. Its signature dish is the “Thick-Cut Gyutan Rice Bowl Set,” with other options including gyutan omelet rice, Sanriku wakame soba, and Basque cheesecake made with Nanbu senbei crackers. It opens at 6:30, making it one of the earliest-opening restaurants in the airport and a good choice for a hot meal before an early flight. For Japanese cuisine, this is a good choice. The signature “Sendai Specialty Gyutan Set” uses slices of beef tongue that are individually seasoned, thoroughly aged, and then grilled to order by the chef. In addition to gyutan, the menu includes soba noodles and a variety of Japanese set meals, making it easier for families to find something everyone likes. The restaurant also opens at 6:30, so there is time to eat before an early flight.

This specialty coffee shop originated in Sendai, roasts its own beans, and purchases them directly from producers. Its signature drink is “FLATWHITE '98,” which pairs well with a Tohoku muffin made from 100% Tohoku-grown flour. The shop also sells an airport-exclusive “Sendai Blend” coffee bean gift box, making it a thoughtful gift for coffee lovers. It opens at 7:00 and is a good place to grab a cup before your flight.

Car Rental at Sendai Airport
If you want to explore Tohoku by car, you can pick up a rental vehicle directly from the airport. Rental counters are concentrated on the first floor near the domestic and international arrivals exits. After completing the paperwork, take the rental company's free shuttle to the vehicle pickup location; the ride takes about 5 to 20 minutes depending on the company. Advance online reservations are recommended, as your preferred vehicle type may not be available for walk-in rentals. Pickup and return locations can be different, which is convenient for one-way itineraries. If traveling to mountain areas such as Zao or Ginzan Onsen in winter, confirm that the vehicle is equipped with winter tires. Car-sharing and unattended rental services are also available in Airport Parking Lot No. 1, allowing you to pick up a car without visiting a counter, which is useful for last-minute rentals.

Sendai Airport Rooftop Observation Deck “Smile Terrace”
While waiting for your flight, do not spend all your time in the departure lounge—the airport has a free rooftop observation deck. From 23 meters above ground, you can watch aircraft take off and land up close. On clear days, the view stretches to the high-rise buildings of central Sendai, the Zao mountain range, and the Pacific Ocean, offering a wide 360-degree panorama. Three 20× telescopes are also available; insert a coin for a clear view toward the far end of the runway. Aircraft movements are frequent, so you usually will not have to wait long to see one. Note that there are no restrooms on the rooftop, so use the facilities before going up. The deck may also close temporarily during bad weather or special events.

Hotels Near Sendai Airport
If you have an early-morning or late-night flight, staying near the airport makes the trip much easier, as you will not need to rush for the first train or worry about delays. If you prefer easier access to the city, staying near Sendai Station is also convenient because the Access Line reaches the airport in about 25 minutes. Both options have their advantages.
Super Hotel Mitazono Sendai Airport
The hotel is one stop and about 4 minutes from the airport on the Access Line, followed by only about a 1-minute walk from Mitazono Station. It is easy to find and convenient to reach. The hotel has a natural hot-spring large bath called “Genji Tsubasa no Yu,” with separate facilities for men and women, open from 15:00 until 9:30 the next morning. The mattresses are the hotel's own pressure-relief design, and eight types of pillows are available for free exchange, making it easy to try different options if you are particular about hotel pillows. 4. Does Sendai Airport Have Lounges, and Can I Use Priority Pass?
The airport's official website lists two types of lounges. The first is the Business Lounge before security on the 3rd floor, open from 7:00 to 20:30 and priced at ¥1,100 per hour. Holders of designated credit cards (including JCB, VISA, Mastercard, DINERS, Rakuten KC, etc.) can use it free of charge by presenting the card and a boarding pass. The second type is the airline lounge after domestic security on the 2nd floor. Neither is a Priority Pass partner lounge.
5. Can I Fly from Tokyo to Sendai?
No. The scheduled routes published by Miyagi Prefecture for Sendai Airport do not include Tokyo (Haneda or Narita). From Narita Airport, travel by JR train or limousine bus to Tokyo Station, then transfer to the Tohoku Shinkansen. The fastest journey to Sendai takes about 1 hour 30 minutes from Tokyo Station.
6. Can I Store Luggage at Sendai Airport?
Yes. Coin lockers are available in the domestic and international arrivals halls on the 1st floor, as well as beside the domestic and international restrooms on the 2nd floor. For 12 hours, small lockers cost ¥300, medium ¥400, large ¥500, extra-large ¥600, and dedicated bicycle carry-bag lockers ¥900. The lockers in the domestic arrivals hall on the 1st floor accept both cash and electronic money, while the others accept cash only. Change machines are available at each location. There is also a Yamato Transport counter on the 2nd floor, where you can send luggage directly.
